The Undresser

2002

Sizes: 60 x 80 cm.  Compositions: 80 x 116cm / 70 x 170 cm

A woman gets undressed ad infinitum without ever baring herself completely. She rids herself of successive layers of clothing in a strange ritual. Her movements are meticulous, serious, sometimes clumsy and proceed by categories: dresses, skirts, blouses, stockings, trousers, socks, clothes from A to Z, black or white. When they fall to the ground, the clothes provoke a series of echoing phrases.

“A woman takes off a blouse, which reveals
another blouse, which she removes, revealing,
another blouse, which she removes, revealing,
another blouse, which she removes, revealing,
another blouse, and the repose of nudity
never comes.”

Henri Michaux in Life in the Folds, 1972
